South Africa and Algeria have reaffirmed their enduring partnership following a high-level engagement between Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Alvin Botes and his Algerian counterpart, Deputy Minister Chaib Sofiane of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria.
The meeting underscored the deep-rooted historical ties between Pretoria and Algiers, while paving the way for enhanced cooperation in key sectors aimed at advancing economic growth, scientific innovation and continental solidarity.
Reaffirming the Pillars of SA-Algeria Relations
Deputy Minister Botes highlighted two fundamental pillars that continue to shape relations between South Africa and Algeria.
Support for Saharawi Self-Determination
South Africa reiterated its principled position on the question of Western Sahara, reaffirming that any future settlement must be guided by the aspirations, choices and legitimate interests of the Saharawi people.
The commitment reflects South Africa’s longstanding foreign policy position in support of decolonisation, self-determination and adherence to international law.
Pursuing Energy Independence
Deputy Minister Botes also pointed to Algeria’s consistency in implementing its foreign policy objectives and safeguarding its strategic national interests, particularly in the energy sector.
He noted that South Africa seeks to draw lessons from Algeria’s experience as it works towards strengthening its own economic resilience and advancing energy security as a cornerstone of national sovereignty.
Moving from Dialogue to Action
The discussions signalled a transition from political dialogue towards tangible cooperation. Deputy Minister Botes announced that Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Ronald Lamola, together with South Africa’s Minister responsible for Energy, are expected to undertake a working visit to Algiers in the near future.
The anticipated visit is expected to further consolidate bilateral relations and unlock opportunities for collaboration in several priority areas, including:
- Trade and investment promotion;
- Energy cooperation;
- Space science and technological innovation;
- Agricultural development and food security; and
- Skills transfer and knowledge exchange.
Describing the relationship between the two countries as one built on fraternity and shared aspirations, Deputy Minister Botes remarked that South Africa and Algeria continue to work together “as a family” in pursuit of mutual prosperity and the broader African development agenda.
Sports Diplomacy as a Unifying Force
Concluding the engagement, Deputy Minister Botes highlighted the role of sports diplomacy in strengthening people-to-people ties between nations. He observed that whenever South Africa takes to the field, it carries with it the hopes and support of friends across the African continent, including Algeria.
The meeting reflects the growing momentum in South Africa-Algeria relations and demonstrates both countries’ commitment to transforming historic solidarity into practical partnerships that contribute to Africa’s industrialisation, innovation and sustainable development.
