The Embassy of Finland in Pretoria has hosted an evening of dialogue bringing together civil society representatives and governance experts to reflect on 30 years of South Africa’s Constitution and the country’s constitutional democracy.

The discussion, hosted by Ambassador Pekka Metso, formed part of preparations for the Embassy’s upcoming event on 6 October, and provided an opportunity for participants to assess the progress South Africa has made since the adoption of its democratic Constitution, while also considering the challenges that remain.

Civil Society and Governance Experts Share Perspectives

Representatives from ISS Africa, the Public Affairs Research Institute (PARI), Democracy Works, Afrobarometer and Phaphama Initiatives NPC participated in the conversation, alongside governance experts Patrick Kulati and Chrissy Dube.

The participants shared a range of perspectives on the development of South Africa’s constitutional democracy, including its achievements, ongoing challenges and the issues that will shape the country’s democratic future.

The discussion highlighted the importance of continued engagement between civil society, governance institutions, researchers and other stakeholders in strengthening democratic governance.

Reflecting on 30 Years of Constitutional Democracy

South Africa’s Constitution has been central to the country’s democratic transformation, providing the framework for governance, human rights, equality and democratic institutions.

Three decades after the adoption of the Constitution, the dialogue offered an opportunity to reflect on both the progress achieved and the work that remains to ensure that constitutional principles continue to translate into meaningful outcomes for South Africans.

Rather than presenting a single perspective, the evening encouraged an open, lively and thoughtful exchange, with participants bringing different experiences and views to the discussion.
