The Embassy of Belgium in Pretoria has welcomed Laurent Renson as its new First Secretary, marking a new addition to Belgium’s diplomatic team in South Africa.

Renson joins the Embassy following previous diplomatic postings in Sarajevo and Munich, bringing valuable international experience to his new assignment in Pretoria.

Focus on Belgium–South Africa Economic Relations

In his new role, Renson will focus on strengthening economic and trade relations between Belgium and South Africa, working closely with key regional partners and business organisations.

His portfolio will include cooperation with Wallonia in South Africa – AWEX, Flanders Investment & Trade (FIT) in Johannesburg, hub.brussels, and the Belgian Chamber of Commerce in South Africa.

The focus on economic diplomacy reflects the importance of continued engagement between Belgium and South Africa, particularly in areas of trade, investment and business cooperation.

Regional Diplomatic Responsibilities

Beyond his work in South Africa, Renson will also oversee Belgium’s bilateral relations with Botswana, Namibia and Lesotho, extending his diplomatic responsibilities across the Southern African region.

His regional portfolio provides an opportunity to further strengthen Belgium’s engagement with partners across Southern Africa and support closer cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

A Passion for Rugby and Southern Africa

Renson also arrives in South Africa with a personal connection to the country’s sporting culture. A passionate rugby enthusiast who has played the sport himself, he is particularly pleased to begin his new assignment in the home of the Springboks.
