South Africans living, studying and working across China are quietly forging deep, everyday connections that strengthen bilateral ties far beyond formal diplomacy, according to the country’s Consul General in Shanghai.

Phuti Joyce Tsipa delivered an impassioned tribute to compatriots in the diaspora during a recent gathering organised by Brand South Africa in Shanghai. The event brought together professionals, students, artists, educators and entrepreneurs to recognise their role in building genuine people-to-people understanding between the two nations.

In her address, Tsipa described these South Africans as creators of “living bridges” — individuals who translate high-level policy into lived experience through shared meals with Chinese friends, classroom exchanges as both students and teachers, business partnerships, cultural workshops, and creative performances.

“Whether they are still learning Mandarin or already fluent, whether they teach Amapiano dance classes, perform as stand-up comedians, lead South African bands, or simply share stories of home as authors and artists, they embed South African vibrancy into daily life here,” she said.

Tsipa singled out the leadership of Brand South Africa’s Head of Diaspora Engagement, Tshepiso Malele, and the dedicated team at the Shanghai Consulate General for facilitating the recognition programme.

The Consul General closed her remarks with a clear message of national pride: “Thank you, patriotic South Africans, for flying the flag higher. We see you. We value you. We appreciate you.”As China–South Africa relations continue to deepen in trade, education and culture, officials increasingly view diaspora communities as indispensable grassroots ambassadors whose personal interactions help sustain long-term mutual trust and cooperation.
