The Embassy of Japan has formalised grant agreements to improve infrastructure at two primary schools in Limpopo province, delivering practical support to under-resourced rural communities.
The funding, provided through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), will construct additional classrooms and new sanitation facilities at Mamokaile Primary School in Moetladimo. At Matshangwane Primary School in Trichardtsdal, the grant will finance a modern computer laboratory and library, improving digital literacy and access to learning resources for hundreds of learners.
Ambassador Ushio Shimizu emphasised the initiative’s focus on children’s futures and community development. The programme, active in South Africa since 1989, has supported more than 200 similar grassroots projects in education, healthcare and water supply.
Local education stakeholders welcomed the assistance, highlighting its potential to reduce overcrowding and bridge the digital divide in remote areas. As South Africa addresses persistent infrastructure gaps, such international partnerships continue to play a valuable role in advancing equitable access to quality education.
