The Embassy of Japan in South Africa hosted an elegant reception on 26 February to mark the birthday of His Majesty Emperor Naruhito, who turned 66 on 23 February.
The event, held under the gracious patronage of Ambassador Fumio Shimizu, highlighted the enduring friendship between Japan and South Africa while showcasing bilateral ties in innovation, industry, and culture.
Ambassador Shimizu delivered warm remarks, extending greetings on behalf of the Japanese government and people. He was joined by South African Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Nomalungelo Gina, who also addressed the gathering, emphasising the strategic partnership between the two nations, particularly in science, technology, and green energy initiatives. Deputy Minister of Correctional Services Lindiwe Ntshalintshali was among the notable attendees, alongside other distinguished guests from government, diplomacy, and the private sector.
Guests enjoyed an exquisite array of Japanese cuisine, offering a taste of Japan’s rich culinary heritage. The day featured exhibitions by prominent Japanese entities operating in South Africa, including Isuzu, Mitsubishi, Hitachi, and several others. These displays highlighted innovative products and contributions to the local economy, from automotive manufacturing and heavy machinery to advanced technology solutions.
The reception underscored Japan’s commitment to deepening economic and cultural exchanges with South Africa, fostering mutual prosperity amid shared global challenges.
