The Embassy of the Republic of South Africa in the Republic of Mali commemorated South African Women’s Day on 10 August 2026 under the theme “Empowered Women Empower the Nation.” The celebration, hosted by H.E. Ambassador Patience Masisi, South Africa’s Ambassador to Mali, brought together women from across the diplomatic, governmental, business and civil society sectors.
Held at Bamako Kitchen, the event was attended by ambassadors, honorary consuls, representatives of Women in Mining-Mali, women from Mali’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, civil society representatives, female members of staff of the South African Embassy and other distinguished guests.
Remembering the Women of 1956
In her address, Ambassador Masisi recalled the historic 9 August 1956 Women’s March in Pretoria, one of the defining moments in South Africa’s struggle against apartheid.
On that day, approximately 20,000 women from diverse backgrounds marched to the Union Buildings to protest against the apartheid government’s oppressive pass laws. The march demonstrated the courage, unity and determination of South African women in confronting injustice and demanding dignity, equality and freedom.
Ambassador Masisi reflected on the enduring significance of this historic mobilisation, highlighting the important role women have played and continue to play in shaping South Africa’s social, political and economic development.
Highlighting Women’s Leadership and Courage
The programme also featured a video presentation highlighting the story of the only woman among the four leaders of the historic 1956 Women’s March. The presentation provided guests with an opportunity to reflect on the individual courage and collective leadership that characterised the struggle of South African women.
The commemoration served not only as a remembrance of the past, but also as an opportunity to recognise the contributions of women working across different sectors in Mali and South Africa.
The gathering brought together women connected to diplomacy, government, mining, civil society and international relations, creating a platform for reflection, solidarity and continued engagement.
Celebrating Women Through Solidarity and Sisterhood
As part of the occasion, Ambassador Masisi hosted a lunch for the women who had joined the Embassy in honouring South African Women’s Day.
The luncheon provided an informal setting for guests to connect, exchange experiences and celebrate the achievements and contributions of women in their respective fields.
The commemoration in Bamako reaffirmed the Embassy’s commitment to celebrating the achievements of women while keeping alive the legacy of the women who stood at the forefront of South Africa’s struggle for freedom.
The theme “Empowered Women Empower the Nation” therefore carried a message that extended beyond the commemoration itself: that empowering women through opportunity, inclusion, leadership and solidarity contributes directly to stronger communities and nations.
