Deputy Director-General Xolisa Mabhongo hosted a high-level engagement with Heads of United Nations (UN) Agencies and Representatives in South Africa on 24 June 2026, reaffirming the country’s commitment to collaborative approaches aimed at addressing migration challenges and advancing sustainable development objectives.

The meeting was led by the UN Resident Coordinator, Mr. Nelson Muffuh, and brought together senior representatives from various UN agencies operating in South Africa to discuss pressing issues related to migration and the welfare of migrants across the country.

Focus on Migration Governance

A key focus of the strategic engagement was the ongoing situation affecting migrants in South Africa. Discussions centred on strengthening cooperation between the South African Government and UN partners to ensure that migration is managed in an orderly, safe, and humane manner.

Participants explored opportunities to enhance migration governance frameworks that are responsive to domestic priorities while remaining aligned with international commitments and the global sustainable development agenda.

Strengthening South Africa–UN Partnership

South Africa and the United Nations continue to work closely to address complex migration dynamics, recognising the importance of coordinated responses that uphold human dignity, promote social cohesion, and contribute to inclusive development.

The engagement underscored the value of multilateral cooperation in finding sustainable solutions to migration-related challenges and ensuring that vulnerable populations receive adequate protection and support.

As migration remains a significant global issue, South Africa’s continued partnership with the United Nations demonstrates a shared commitment to fostering policies and programmes that support both national development priorities and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
