A vibrant new mural promoting environmental awareness and urban sustainability has been unveiled in Pretoria’s Central Business District (CBD), marking the culmination of months of collaboration between Danish and South African partners.
The initiative was spearheaded by the Embassy of Denmark in South Africa in partnership with the City of Tshwane, the City of Aarhus in Denmark, and the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT). The colourful artwork serves as a visual reminder of the importance of protecting the environment and keeping urban spaces clean, green and sustainable.
A Symbol of International Cooperation
The mural reflects the strong partnership between Denmark and South Africa in advancing sustainable urban development and environmental stewardship. Through the collaboration of local government, academia and international partners, the project demonstrates how public art can be used as a powerful tool to inspire behavioural change and community engagement.
Speaking during the unveiling ceremony, Danish Ambassador Karin Poulsen highlighted the deeper significance of the artwork.
“This mural is not just paint on a wall. It is a conversation between art and science, between university and city, and between Denmark and South Africa.”
Her remarks underscored the project’s role in fostering dialogue around sustainability while strengthening ties between institutions and communities.
Art Driving Environmental Awareness
Located in Pretoria’s CBD, the mural is designed to encourage residents, students and visitors to reflect on their environmental responsibilities and the role each individual can play in creating cleaner and healthier cities.
By combining artistic expression with environmental messaging, the initiative aims to raise awareness about waste management, urban cleanliness and sustainable living practices.
The artwork was created by local artist Jaco Uitenweerde, whose creative vision transformed the environmental themes into a striking public installation that is expected to become a prominent feature of the city landscape.
Commitment to Biodiversity and Conservation
Beyond the mural itself, the project incorporated a practical conservation component. To demonstrate their shared commitment to sustainability and ecological restoration, representatives from the partner organisations each planted a pepper bark tree in a restored university park.
The tree-planting initiative symbolises a long-term investment in biodiversity conservation and the restoration of local ecosystems, complementing the environmental message conveyed through the mural.
