University of Johannesburg commemorated the 223rd anniversary of the Haitian flag on 18 May 2026 through a symbolic flag-raising ceremony and the signing of a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Embassy of the Republic of Haiti in South Africa.
The occasion marked a significant moment in strengthening relations between Haiti and South Africa through higher education, academic diplomacy, cultural engagement and international cooperation. Hosted by UJ Vice-Chancellor and Principal Prof Letlhokwa George Mpedi alongside His Excellency Jean Robert Pillard, the event brought together diplomats, academics, students and distinguished guests in celebration of Haiti’s enduring legacy of freedom, sovereignty and resilience.
Honouring the Legacy of the Haitian Flag
Observed annually on 18 May, Haitian Flag Day commemorates the creation of the Haitian flag during the Haitian Revolution in 1803 — a defining moment in the struggle against colonialism and slavery. The revolution ultimately led to Haiti becoming the first Black republic and the first independent Caribbean state in 1804.
The flag-raising ceremony at UJ served not only as a tribute to Haiti’s revolutionary history, but also as a reaffirmation of shared values between Africa and the Caribbean, particularly the pursuit of liberation, dignity, unity and self-determination.
The event highlighted the growing importance of cultural and educational diplomacy in fostering stronger connections between African and Caribbean institutions.
