The High Commission of Sri Lanka in South Africa hosted a meaningful Vesak Day celebration in Pretoria, bringing together Sri Lankans living across Johannesburg, Pretoria and surrounding cities in a spirit of spirituality, peace and cultural unity.
Held on 09 May 2026 at the Sri Lanka High Commission in Pretoria, the event commemorated Vesak Day — one of the most sacred occasions in Buddhism, marking the birth, enlightenment and passing of Lord Buddha. The programme drew more than 70 participants, including members of the diplomatic corps and the broader Sri Lankan community in South Africa.
Spiritual Observances and Religious Blessings
The ceremony commenced with a Buddha Puja and a series of religious observances led by Most Venerable Phra Kitsakol Phaenoi alongside three Theros.
The religious programme featured Dharma sermons, chanting sessions, meditation, blessings and the transfer of merits, allowing devotees to reflect on the teachings of Buddhism and the values of compassion, mindfulness and harmony.
Participants gathered in prayer and reflection as the spiritual leaders guided worshippers through sacred rituals associated with Vesak Day, creating an atmosphere of peace and devotion.

One of the highlights of the celebration was the lighting of Vesak lanterns and oil lamps, symbolising wisdom, enlightenment and inner peace.
The colourful lanterns illuminated the High Commission grounds, while devotees participated in a Bhakthi Geetha session — a devotional singing programme that encouraged spiritual reflection and unity among attendees.
