A Historic Milestone for Haiti–South Africa Relations
The Embassy of the Republic of Haiti and the University of Johannesburg have officially signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), marking a major step forward in strengthening relations between Haiti and South Africa through education, research, innovation, and institutional cooperation.

Engagements Leading Up to the MoU Signing
The signing of the MoU follows a series of engagements led by Jean Pillard aimed at strengthening ties between Haiti and UJ.
Over recent months, the Embassy of Haiti and the university held strategic meetings and working sessions focused on education, innovation, research, entrepreneurship, artificial intelligence, and cultural cooperation.
Ambassador Pillard engaged with UJ Vice-Chancellor Letlhokwa George Mpedi and university leadership on opportunities for collaboration between Haitian institutions and the university in areas such as AI, public health, disaster resilience, agriculture, and academic exchange.
The Embassy also hosted a high-level delegation from UJ for discussions focused on expanding cooperation between Haitian institutions and the university, with both sides expressing strong commitment to formalising long-term partnerships.
Additional engagements included discussions on AI governance, cultural exchanges highlighting Haitian heritage and cuisine, and engagements with UJFM focused on strengthening public dialogue and collaboration between Haiti and the university community.
