On 14 April 2026, H.E. Mr NJ Mashimbye, Ambassador of the Republic of South Africa to the Arab Republic of Egypt, held a high-level meeting with Mr George Elombi, President of African Export-Import Bank, at the Bank’s headquarters in Heliopolis, Cairo.
The meeting marked a significant milestone as the first official courtesy call following South Africa’s accession to and signing of the Establishment Agreement of Afreximbank. This development represents a strategic step toward aligning South Africa more closely with continental trade, investment, and development financing mechanisms.
Strengthening South Africa’s Role in Continental Trade
Discussions between Ambassador Mashimbye and President Elombi focused on advancing strategic cooperation between South Africa and Afreximbank. Key areas of engagement included enhancing South Africa’s participation in the Bank’s programmes, as well as leveraging its financial instruments to support industrialisation, export development, and economic diversification.
The meeting also explored ways to unlock new opportunities for South African businesses through expanded access to trade finance, project funding, and intra-African trade initiatives.
Supporting AfCFTA and Regional Integration
A central theme of the discussions was the role of Afreximbank in advancing the objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area. Both parties highlighted the importance of deepening regional integration by facilitating cross-border trade and strengthening value chains across the continent.
South Africa’s participation in Afreximbank is expected to play a pivotal role in supporting the implementation of AfCFTA by improving trade facilitation, reducing barriers, and enhancing competitiveness in key sectors.
Turning Membership into Tangible Outcomes
Both sides underscored the importance of translating South Africa’s membership into concrete and measurable outcomes. Emphasis was placed on mobilising capital to support infrastructure and industrial projects, strengthening trade-enabling systems, and promoting value-added production across strategic industries.
This engagement reflects South Africa’s growing commitment to economic diplomacy and its intention to actively contribute to Africa’s economic transformation through strengthened partnerships with key continental institutions.
