South Africa has taken a significant step in strengthening economic ties with Ethiopia, as a delegation led by the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic) undertook a trade mission to Addis Ababa this week.

The mission, supported by the South African Embassy in Ethiopia, focused on expanding trade and investment opportunities between the two African economies. It brought together business representatives, government agencies, and key stakeholders to explore partnerships in sectors ranging from manufacturing to services.

According to officials, the initiative forms part of South Africa’s broader strategy to enhance intra-African trade under frameworks such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). By engaging directly with Ethiopian counterparts, the delegation sought to identify areas of mutual benefit and unlock new market opportunities.

Ethiopia, one of Africa’s fastest-growing economies, presents a strategic gateway for South African businesses seeking to expand their footprint on the continent. Discussions during the mission highlighted the importance of collaboration, knowledge exchange, and investment in driving sustainable economic growth.
