On 5 March 2026, Mndeni Mthabela, Director of Diplomacy South Africa, signed the book of condolences at the Indonesian Embassy to honour the late Bapak Try Sutrisno, the sixth Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia.
Described as a true patriot and statesman, Sutrisno’s passing has drawn heartfelt tributes from across the globe, including from South Africa, reflecting his enduring legacy of dedicated service to nation and state.
Born on 15 November 1935 in Surabaya, East Java, during the Dutch colonial era, Try Sutrisno rose through the ranks of the Indonesian military after graduating from the Army Technical Academy in 1959. A distinguished army general, he served as Chief of Staff of the Army (1986–1988) and Commander of the Armed Forces (1988–1993). In 1993, he was elected Vice President under President Soeharto, holding the office until 1998 during the final years of the New Order era.
Known for his discipline, modesty, and unwavering loyalty to Indonesia, Sutrisno received numerous national and international honours for his contributions. He passed away on 2 March 2026 at age 90 at Gatot Soebroto Army Hospital in Jakarta, and was laid to rest with full military honours at Kalibata Heroes’ Cemetery.
Mthabela extended deepest condolences to Sutrisno’s family—including his wife Tuti Sutiawati and their seven children—and the Indonesian people, acknowledging his profound impact as a soldier and leader.
