Jamaica marked its 64th anniversary of Independence with a distinctive sports-focused celebration at the CFC Rugby Club in Pretoria, bringing together members of the diplomatic corps, the Jamaican diaspora, sporting enthusiasts and guests.
The celebration placed sport at the heart of Jamaica’s Independence observances, reflecting the 2026 theme, “United in Celebrating Resilience.” Jamaica gained independence in 1962.
Jamaica Highlights Sport as a National Asset
Addressing guests, Her Excellency Joan Thomas Edwards, High Commissioner of Jamaica to South Africa, described sport as one of Jamaica’s major national assets and encouraged guests to view Jamaica not only as a tourism destination, but also as a sporting destination.
“Jamaica is a sporting nation. We love sports, and we are highly competitive people,” she said.
Rather than holding a conventional diplomatic reception, the High Commission created an interactive celebration focused on participation, competition and social engagement.

Sports Diplomacy Between Jamaica and South Africa
The event highlighted the potential for sports diplomacy between Jamaica and South Africa, two countries with strong sporting cultures and internationally recognised achievements.
The Jamaican High Commission has identified sport and sport science as areas of cooperation between the two countries, including anti-doping, sports medicine, training, technical knowledge and sporting exchanges.

Competition, Community and the Jamaican Spirit
Participants were divided into sporting houses, including Kingston Fire, Pocket Rocket and Cool Runnings, reflecting Jamaica’s sporting culture and identity.
Members of the Jamaican diaspora and diplomatic community also participated, turning the celebration into an opportunity for networking and cultural exchange.
An Ambassadorial Race had taken place earlier, bringing members of the diplomatic corps into the sporting activities.

Celebrating Resilience Through Sport
The focus on sport connected directly with Jamaica’s Independence theme, “United in Celebrating Resilience.”
For Jamaica, resilience is reflected in the determination, discipline and competitiveness of its athletes. Sporting achievements have also played an important role in strengthening the country’s international profile.
The national Independence celebrations in Jamaica likewise placed resilience at the centre of the 2026 programme.

A Different Kind of Diplomatic Celebration
The Pretoria event demonstrated how diplomacy can extend beyond formal meetings and receptions.
Through sport, Jamaica created a platform for diplomats, diaspora members and guests to meet, compete and celebrate together.
The event highlighted the potential of sports diplomacy as a tool for strengthening bilateral relations, cultural understanding and cooperation between Jamaica and South Africa.
As Jamaica celebrated 64 years of Independence, the Pretoria gathering became a celebration of resilience, unity and the power of sport to bring people together.
