South Africa and Jordan Look to Boost Bilateral Tourism Through Roadshows and Trade Engagement

The Embassy of South Africa in Jordan has engaged the Board of Directors of the Jordan Inbound Tour Operators Association (JITOA) to explore opportunities for strengthening tourism cooperation and promoting greater travel between South Africa and Jordan.

The meeting provided an opportunity for both sides to exchange perspectives on their respective tourism sectors and identify areas for closer collaboration, including tourism promotion, business-to-business engagement and the organisation of tourism roadshows in both countries.

Jordan’s Growing Faith Tourism Potential

During the engagement, JITOA highlighted Jordan’s strong faith tourism offering, which forms an important part of the country’s appeal to international visitors.

Among the key destinations highlighted were the Baptism Site of John the Baptist, Madaba, Petra and Wadi Rum. These attractions offer visitors a combination of religious, historical, cultural and natural experiences.

Preparations for the 2030 commemoration of the baptism of Jesus Christ by John the Baptist are also expected to provide further impetus to religious tourism in Jordan, creating opportunities for increased international visitation and tourism partnerships.

South Africa Promotes Its Diverse Tourism Offering

The South African Embassy used the engagement to showcase South Africa as an attractive destination for Jordanian travellers, highlighting the country’s diverse tourism experiences, warm hospitality, favourable climate, rich cultural heritage and world-class tourism infrastructure.

South Africa offers a wide range of experiences for international visitors, including wildlife safaris, spectacular landscapes, beaches, adventure tourism, vibrant cities, cultural and heritage tourism, and business travel.

The Embassy also emphasised South Africa’s commitment to responsible and sustainable tourism, positioning the country as a destination capable of catering to different traveller interests and markets.

Tourism Roadshows and Business-to-Business Engagement

Both sides encouraged the organisation of tourism roadshows in South Africa and Jordan as a practical mechanism to increase awareness of each country’s tourism offerings and facilitate direct engagement between tourism stakeholders.

Such initiatives could help tourism operators, travel agencies and other industry players develop new partnerships, share market knowledge and promote travel packages between the two destinations.

JITOA Invited to South African Tourism Indaba

As part of efforts to strengthen tourism industry-to-industry cooperation, JITOA was invited to participate in South African Tourism Indaba, one of Africa’s leading international travel trade exhibitions.

The exhibition attracts tourism stakeholders from more than 50 countries and provides an important platform for networking, business development and the promotion of tourism products to international markets.

Participation by Jordanian tourism operators could provide an opportunity to deepen links with South African tourism businesses while showcasing Jordan’s attractions to a broader African and international tourism audience.

Strengthening South Africa-Jordan Tourism Relations

The engagement between the South African Embassy and JITOA reflects the potential for tourism to contribute to stronger people-to-people connections and broader economic cooperation between South Africa and Jordan.

With Jordan offering a distinctive faith, heritage and cultural tourism proposition, and South Africa providing a diverse combination of wildlife, adventure, beaches, culture and business tourism, increased cooperation could create new opportunities for travellers and tourism businesses in both countries.

The proposed tourism roadshows and participation in international travel trade platforms such as Tourism Indaba could provide important next steps towards expanding tourism exchanges and strengthening bilateral tourism cooperation between South Africa and Jordan.
