The High Commission of the Republic of Singapore in Pretoria hosted a distinguished evening reception on Thursday, 6 August 2026, to commemorate the 61st National Day of the Republic of Singapore, bringing together members of the diplomatic corps, senior government officials, business leaders and invited guests to celebrate the enduring friendship between Singapore and South Africa.
The reception was hosted by High Commissioner H.E. Zainal Arif Mantaha and Ms Jennifer Cheng, who welcomed guests to BabaHouse Pretoria, where the evening celebrated Singapore’s remarkable journey as an independent nation while reaffirming the growing partnership between the two countries. High Commissioner Mantaha has served as Singapore’s representative to South Africa since 2021 and is concurrently accredited to Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Namibia and Zimbabwe.
Representing the South African Government was Deputy Minister in the Presidency for Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, Hon. Seiso Joel Mohai, whose presence underscored the importance South Africa attaches to its longstanding diplomatic and economic relations with Singapore.
Celebrating 61 Years of Independence
Singapore celebrates its National Day annually on 9 August, marking the nation’s independence in 1965. Since gaining sovereignty, the island nation has transformed itself into one of the world’s leading financial, logistics and innovation hubs, renowned for its efficient governance, world-class infrastructure, advanced manufacturing, technological innovation and globally competitive economy. The annual National Day celebration serves not only as a commemoration of Singapore’s nationhood but also as an opportunity for its diplomatic missions worldwide to strengthen international partnerships and deepen people-to-people ties.
This year’s celebration reflected Singapore’s continued commitment to international cooperation, multilateralism and mutually beneficial partnerships with countries across Africa, including South Africa.
Strengthening South Africa–Singapore Relations
South Africa and Singapore have enjoyed warm diplomatic relations for decades, underpinned by growing cooperation in trade, investment, education, innovation, skills development and capacity building.
Singapore remains an important economic partner for South Africa and serves as one of Asia’s principal financial and logistics gateways. Bilateral engagement continues to expand through government cooperation, business exchanges and partnerships in areas such as digital transformation, smart cities, maritime industries and economic development.
The attendance of Deputy Minister Seiso Joel Mohai highlighted South Africa’s commitment to strengthening these bilateral relations and exploring new opportunities for cooperation that contribute to inclusive growth and sustainable development in both countries.
An Evening of Diplomacy and Culture
Adding a unique cultural dimension to the celebration was a special performance by internationally acclaimed concert pianist and Steinway Artist Wang Congyu, whose musical presentation complemented the evening’s programme and reflected Singapore’s appreciation for cultural diplomacy.
The reception also provided an opportunity for members of the diplomatic community, government representatives, business leaders and invited guests to engage in dialogue, strengthen professional networks and reaffirm their shared commitment to international cooperation.
