EU Launches Investment Roadshow in South Africa Under €11.5 Billion Global Gateway Initiative

The European Union (EU) officially launched its Global Gateway Investment Roadshow in South Africa on 1 June 2026, marking a significant step in strengthening economic cooperation, sustainable development, and strategic investment partnerships between South Africa and Europe.

The roadshow, which will travel through Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban, brings together development finance institutions, public authorities, financial institutions, companies, investors, and project promoters to explore concrete business and investment opportunities across critical sectors of the economy.

The initiative is anchored in the €11.5 billion (approximately ZAR 220 billion) Global Gateway Team Europe Investment Package, one of the largest international investment commitments supporting South Africa’s economic development agenda. Through this programme, the European Union aims to strengthen local value chains, stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and address shared global challenges through collaborative and sustainable investments.

High-Level Leadership Signals Strong Commitment

The launch event featured key remarks from European Union Ambassador to South Africa, Sandra Kramer, and South Africa’s Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Parks Tau, who both underscored the importance of strengthening economic ties and building mutually beneficial partnerships.

Addressing stakeholders from government, business, development finance institutions, and the investment community, Ambassador Kramer highlighted the European Union’s commitment to translating strategic partnerships into tangible development outcomes.

She emphasised that the Global Gateway strategy is designed to mobilise quality investments that support infrastructure development, industrial growth, innovation, clean energy transitions, digital connectivity, and sustainable economic transformation. The roadshow, she noted, demonstrates the EU’s commitment to working closely with South African partners to unlock opportunities that deliver long-term benefits for communities, businesses, and future generations.

Minister Parks Tau welcomed the initiative as an important contribution to South Africa’s economic priorities. He highlighted the critical role of investment in driving industrialisation, expanding productive capacity, creating employment opportunities, and strengthening South Africa’s competitiveness within the global economy.

The Minister further stressed the importance of collaboration between government, investors, development institutions, and the private sector to ensure that investment translates into meaningful socio-economic impact and inclusive growth.

Global Gateway in Action

The investment roadshow serves as a practical demonstration of the European Union’s Global Gateway strategy in action. It creates a platform for direct engagement between key stakeholders, enabling discussions around real investment opportunities, project financing, infrastructure development, and strategic partnerships.

By bringing together decision-makers and investors, the initiative seeks to accelerate the implementation of projects capable of generating sustainable economic returns while addressing development priorities.

The Global Gateway strategy represents the European Union’s vision for sustainable and trusted investments around the world. Through the strategy, the EU supports partner countries in developing quality infrastructure, strengthening connectivity, advancing innovation, and enhancing economic resilience.

In South Africa, the initiative aligns with national development priorities and aims to support sectors that can contribute significantly to long-term growth, competitiveness, and social development.

Unlocking Investment and Job Creation

A central objective of the Global Gateway Team Europe Investment Package is to strengthen local supply chains and create opportunities for businesses across South Africa.

Through targeted investments and strategic collaborations, the programme seeks to stimulate economic activity, attract additional private-sector participation, and create employment opportunities in sectors that are essential to sustainable development.

The roadshow will provide a valuable platform for identifying bankable projects, facilitating partnerships, and exploring innovative financing solutions capable of delivering measurable impact across communities and industries.

As South Africa continues to pursue inclusive economic growth and industrial expansion, international partnerships such as the Global Gateway initiative are expected to play an increasingly important role in mobilising resources and expertise.

Addressing Shared Global Challenges

Beyond economic development, the Global Gateway initiative seeks to support efforts aimed at addressing broader global challenges, including climate change, energy security, sustainable infrastructure development, and digital transformation.

The investment package is expected to support projects that contribute to green industrialisation, renewable energy development, transport and logistics improvements, digital innovation, and other strategic priorities that strengthen economic resilience and sustainability.

The initiative also reflects the growing importance of international cooperation in responding to complex global challenges that require coordinated action and long-term investment.

Looking Ahead

As the roadshow progresses through Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban, stakeholders will have the opportunity to engage directly with potential investors, development finance institutions, policymakers, and project developers.

The discussions are expected to generate new partnerships, unlock investment opportunities, and accelerate projects that contribute to infrastructure development, economic diversification, industrial growth, and job creation.

The launch of the Global Gateway Investment Roadshow marks another important milestone in EU-South Africa relations and demonstrates a shared commitment to building a prosperous, sustainable, and inclusive future through strategic investment and cooperation.

With an investment commitment of €11.5 billion, the Global Gateway Team Europe Investment Package stands as a powerful example of how international partnerships can drive economic transformation, strengthen resilience, and create lasting opportunities for growth across South Africa.
