The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), in collaboration with the Eastern Cape Government, Transkei Agricultural Development Institute (TARDI), and the Eastern Cape Development Corporation, successfully hosted an Equipment Handover Ceremony aimed at strengthening animal health services across the province.

This initiative forms part of the Veterinary Paraprofessional Programme, a strategic effort to enhance the capacity of Animal Health Technicians (AHTs) working in rural and underserved communities. The programme is designed to improve livestock health, safeguard food security, and support sustainable agricultural development in the Eastern Cape.

Strengthening Veterinary Services at Grassroots Level

Animal Health Technicians play a vital role in monitoring livestock diseases, supporting farmers, and ensuring compliance with animal health standards. However, many operate in resource-constrained environments, limiting their effectiveness.

The equipment handover addresses this gap by providing essential tools that will enable technicians to carry out fieldwork more efficiently and effectively. These tools include diagnostic kits, protective gear, and mobility support equipment—critical resources for improving disease surveillance and response.

By empowering veterinary paraprofessionals, the programme directly contributes to stronger biosecurity systems and improved livestock productivity, particularly among smallholder and emerging farmers.
