The Ambassador of Lithuania to South Africa, Rasa Jankauskaitė, recently met with heritage researchers Augustinas Žemaitis and Aistė Žemaitienė during their visit to South Africa as part of the globally recognised “Gabalėliai Lietuvos” (Global Lithuania) project.
The meeting highlighted the importance of preserving and documenting Lithuanian and Litvak heritage sites across South Africa, strengthening cultural ties between Lithuania and the South African Lithuanian community.
Preserving Lithuanian and Litvak Heritage Abroad
The “Gabalėliai Lietuvos” project is an ambitious international initiative aimed at identifying, documenting, and sharing Lithuanian heritage sites around the world. Through in-depth research, photography, and storytelling, the project captures the legacy of Lithuanian communities and the historical footprints they have left in different countries.
In South Africa, the focus includes:
- Historic Lithuanian community sites
- Litvak (Lithuanian Jewish) heritage landmarks
- Cultural institutions and diaspora contributions
- Stories of migration, identity, and legacy
This work ensures that the contributions of Lithuanians abroad remain visible and appreciated for generations to come.
Strengthening Cultural Diplomacy Between Lithuania and South Africa
The engagement between Ambassador Jankauskaitė and the visiting researchers underscores Lithuania’s commitment to cultural diplomacy and diaspora engagement. By supporting projects like “Gabalėliai Lietuvos”, Lithuania continues to foster meaningful connections with its global community while promoting shared heritage and historical awareness.
South Africa, home to a diverse and vibrant Lithuanian and Litvak diaspora, offers a rich landscape of stories that reflect resilience, migration, and cultural preservation.
A Forthcoming Publication to Capture Untold Stories
A key outcome of the visit is the anticipated publication of a forthcoming book that will document Lithuanian and Litvak heritage sites in South Africa. The book is expected to provide:
- Rich historical insights
- Visual documentation of heritage locations
- Personal narratives from the Lithuanian diaspora
- A global perspective on Lithuanian identity
This publication will serve as an important cultural resource, offering both educational and historical value to readers in Lithuania, South Africa, and beyond.
The collaboration between the Lithuanian Embassy and the “Gabalėliai Lietuvos” team marks a significant step in preserving global Lithuanian heritage. As the project continues its work, it reinforces the importance of documenting diaspora histories and celebrating cultural identity across borders.
The forthcoming book is highly anticipated and is expected to shine a spotlight on the enduring legacy of Lithuanians and Litvaks in South Africa.
