On 17 April 2026, the Embassy of Japan in South Africa hosted a dynamic Japan–South Africa Sports Exchange event, underscoring the growing importance of sports diplomacy in strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations.

The event, led by Ambassador Fumio Shimizu, brought together key stakeholders from government, sport, and business, creating a vibrant platform for collaboration and cultural exchange. The highlight of the occasion was the presence of Olympic gold medallist and world-renowned javelin thrower Haruka Kitaguchi, whose participation inspired athletes and attendees alike.

Also present was Barry Hendricks, President of South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee, alongside a host of talented South African athletes.
