South Africa and Thailand are accelerating efforts to deepen their economic partnership following a high-level meeting between Ambassador Darkey Africa of South Africa to Thailand and Suphajee Suthumpun, Minister of Commerce of Thailand, on Wednesday, 25 March 2026, at Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce in Bangkok.

The courtesy call marked an important step in strengthening bilateral relations, with both sides reaffirming their shared commitment to expanding trade and investment flows in a more balanced, strategic, and mutually beneficial manner. Discussions focused on enhancing market access, promoting South African products within the Thai market, and positioning South Africa as a gateway for Thai businesses seeking entry into the broader African continent.

A key area of emphasis was the importance of improving two-way trade by unlocking new opportunities across priority sectors. Both parties also explored ways to strengthen regional supply chains and improve connectivity between Africa and Southeast Asia, recognising the growing importance of inter-regional cooperation in a shifting global economic landscape.

In a significant outcome, the two sides agreed to expedite the establishment of the Thailand–South Africa Joint Trade Committee (JTC) within 2026. The committee is expected to serve as a structured platform for dialogue, coordination, and implementation of trade initiatives, with ambitions to elevate it to ministerial level to further strengthen policy alignment.

The meeting also opened the door for future high-level engagements, reflecting a shared intention to build a forward-looking partnership grounded in practical outcomes.

As global trade continues to evolve, South Africa and Thailand are positioning themselves to leverage new opportunities through strengthened cooperation. This engagement signals not only a deepening of bilateral ties but also a broader commitment to advancing South-South collaboration that delivers real economic impact for both nations.
