In a significant step toward bolstering South Africa-EU relations, Ambassador Tokozile Xasa met with prominent European figures at the European Parliament on March 8, 2026.
The discussions involved Spanish MEP Hana Jalloul Muro, Vice-Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee (AFET) and a substitute on the International Trade Committee (INTA), alongside Giacomo Filibeck, Secretary General of the Party of European Socialists (PES), closely affiliated with the Socialists and Democrats (S&D) Group – the second-largest in the Parliament.
The fruitful exchange focused on shared priorities, including international trade, foreign policy, and human rights, amid ongoing global challenges. Ambassador Xasa, representing South Africa’s interests in Brussels, highlighted opportunities for enhanced cooperation between the African nation and the EU bloc.
This meeting underscores Pretoria’s proactive diplomacy in Europe, aiming to strengthen economic partnerships and address mutual concerns like sustainable development and security. As South Africa navigates post-pandemic recovery, such engagements could pave the way for new agreements benefiting both continents.
