Efforts to strengthen connectivity between India and South Africa received renewed momentum as the Consul General of India in Johannesburg, Sh. S. Koventhan, met with Mr. Matshela Seshibe, Acting Chief Executive Officer of South African Airways (SAA), to discuss the establishment of direct air connectivity between Indian cities and Johannesburg.
The high-level engagement focused on expanding aviation cooperation between the two countries, with particular emphasis on restoring direct passenger services that would facilitate tourism, trade, investment, and people-to-people exchanges.
India Requests Resumption of Johannesburg–Mumbai Direct Flights
During the meeting, Consul General Koventhan highlighted the importance of reinstating direct flights between Johannesburg and Mumbai, a route that previously served as a vital gateway connecting the African continent with one of India’s largest commercial and financial hubs.
The Consul General requested South African Airways to consider resuming the Johannesburg–Mumbai service, noting that direct connectivity would significantly improve travel convenience for business leaders, tourists, students, and members of the Indian diaspora living in South Africa.
The proposal also included exploring direct flight connections between Johannesburg and other major Indian cities to meet the growing demand for travel between the two nations.
Boosting Tourism and Economic Cooperation
Improved air connectivity is expected to unlock substantial opportunities for tourism growth. India remains one of the world’s fastest-growing outbound tourism markets, while South Africa continues to position itself as a premier destination for leisure, wildlife, cultural, and business tourism.
Direct flights would reduce travel time, eliminate lengthy transit connections, and make both destinations more accessible to travelers.
Enhanced aviation links are also expected to support increased business travel, encourage investment opportunities, and facilitate stronger commercial partnerships between companies operating in both countries.
Strengthening India–South Africa Relations
The discussions reflect the broader strategic partnership between India and South Africa, two influential members of the Global South that continue to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors, including trade, investment, education, technology, and multilateral diplomacy.
