South Africa’s Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Alvin Botes, participated in the 26th Commonwealth Foreign Affairs Ministers Meeting (CFAMM) at Lancaster House
Accompanied by High Commissioner to the UK, His Excellency Kingsley Mamabolo, Botes joined representatives from 56 nations to address global fractures and foster shared prosperity.
The meeting, held on March 8, kickstarted Commonwealth Day activities under the theme “Unlocking Opportunities Together for a Prosperous Commonwealth.” For the first time, it featured a morning retreat themed ‘The Commonwealth at a Moment of Strategic Opportunity,’ followed by a formal session. Chaired by Samoa’s Finance Minister Hon Mulipola Anarosa Ale Molio’o, ministers deliberated on two reform papers, agreeing on five themes for the 2026 CHOGM Communiqué to streamline operations and enhance impact.
Discussions focused on the organization’s role in navigating geopolitical tensions, climate crises, and economic inequalities, exploring transformative solutions for collective progress.
This CFAMM followed the 72nd Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) meeting on March 7, where governance and democracy were reviewed. South Africa’s involvement underscores its commitment to multilateralism, promoting African interests within the Commonwealth framework. As a member since 1994, SA continues to advocate for equitable development and peace.
Commonwealth Secretary-General Hon Shirley Botchwey highlighted the urgency of renewal in her opening remarks. With global challenges mounting, the meeting signals hope for unified action, positioning the Commonwealth as a beacon for inclusive growth. Botes’ participation reaffirms Pretoria’s dedication to a better Africa and world.
