The Republic of Madagascar has officially deployed its Ambassador-designate to South Africa, Mr Toavina Ralambomahay, who arrived in Pretoria this week to assume his responsibilities as the new Head of Mission of Madagascar in South Africa.
His appointment, approved by the South African Government following a decision of Madagascar’s Council of Ministers, marks a renewed commitment by both countries to strengthen their longstanding diplomatic partnership and advance mutually beneficial cooperation.
A Diplomat with Political and Municipal Experience
Ambassador-designate Ralambomahay brings with him a background in public service, local governance, and political engagement. He previously served as a city council member in Madagascar and has been associated with the Ecological Humanist Party (Parti Humaniste Écologique), a political movement that advocates for sustainable development, human-centred governance, and environmental stewardship.
His experience in municipal administration and political affairs is expected to complement Madagascar’s efforts to enhance its diplomatic outreach and deepen engagement with strategic partners across the Southern African region.
The appointment of Mr Ralambomahay reflects Madagascar’s confidence in his ability to represent the country’s interests and contribute to strengthening political, economic, and people-to-people relations with South Africa.
Courtesy Engagement Ahead of Assuming Duties
In preparation for the commencement of his diplomatic tenure, Ambassador-designate Ralambomahay paid a courtesy call on Ambassador Chabane on 28 May 2026.
The meeting provided an opportunity to exchange views on bilateral cooperation and discuss priorities aimed at further consolidating relations between Antananarivo and Pretoria. Discussions reportedly focused on enhancing collaboration in areas of mutual interest and sustaining the positive trajectory of diplomatic engagement between the two nations.
Madagascar–South Africa Relations
Madagascar and South Africa enjoy cordial and historic bilateral relations underpinned by shared commitments to regional integration, economic development, peace, and cooperation within the Southern African region.
South Africa remains an important regional partner for Madagascar, with opportunities for expanded cooperation in sectors such as:

- Maritime and blue economy initiatives;
