DIRCO Equips Young Leaders Through SADC Youth Capacity Programme on Peace and Security

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) is hosting the SADC Youth Capacity Programme, a strategic initiative aimed at strengthening the Youth, Peace and Security Agenda while fostering meaningful youth participation in building peaceful, inclusive and resilient societies across Southern Africa.

The programme brings together young leaders and emerging changemakers from across the region, equipping them with the knowledge, skills and practical tools needed to actively contribute to peacebuilding, democratic governance and conflict prevention efforts within their respective communities and countries.

Equipping Youth for Leadership and Peacebuilding

The SADC Youth Capacity Programme offers participants a comprehensive learning experience through a series of thematic sessions designed to deepen their understanding of regional and global dynamics. Key areas of focus include:

  • The International Context – Exploring global trends, geopolitical developments and their implications for Southern Africa.
  • Leadership and Strong Democracy – Examining the principles of democratic governance, ethical leadership and active citizenship.
  • Conflict Indicators and Early Warning Mechanisms – Understanding the drivers of conflict and developing the ability to identify risks before they escalate.
  • Conflict in Africa: The Role of Youth in Peacebuilding – Highlighting the critical role young people play in mediation, dialogue, reconciliation and sustaining peace across the continent.

Advancing the Youth, Peace and Security Agenda

The programme aligns with regional and continental commitments that recognise young people as indispensable partners in promoting peace, security and sustainable development. By investing in youth capacity development, DIRCO is contributing to the creation of a new generation of leaders who are prepared to address complex challenges facing Southern Africa and the broader African continent.

Beyond knowledge-sharing, the initiative seeks to inspire young people to become active participants in shaping policies, strengthening democratic institutions and advancing social cohesion within their societies.

Building a More Resilient Southern Africa

As Southern Africa continues to navigate evolving political, economic and security dynamics, initiatives such as the SADC Youth Capacity Programme underscore the importance of empowering young people with the competencies required to drive positive change.

Through targeted training and engagement, the programme is helping to nurture informed, skilled and committed youth leaders who can contribute meaningfully to peace, democratic governance and regional stability, ultimately supporting the vision of a more prosperous, peaceful and resilient Southern African region.
