Diplomatic Dialogue in Rustenburg: Bridging International Relations and Local Prosperity

On 9 January 2025, International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola hosted a strategic Working Brunch in partnership with the Rustenburg Local Municipality, bringing together national leaders, diplomats, and local authorities to explore South Africa’s global role in driving grassroots development.

The event, themed “2026 Foreign Policy Outlook: Advancing People-Centred Development,” featured Minister Lamola and Deputy Minister Alvin Botes, alongside members of the Diplomatic Corps. It highlighted the vital link between South Africa’s international engagements and tangible benefits for communities.

Executive Mayor Cllr Shiela Mabale-Huma welcomed guests, underscoring Rustenburg’s position as an economic hub in the platinum-rich North West province. She stressed the importance of forging global partnerships to boost job creation, skills development, infrastructure investment, and sustainable service delivery.

Discussions centred on synchronising the country’s 2026 foreign policy priorities with local needs, enhancing intergovernmental cooperation across national, provincial, and municipal levels, and using diplomacy to unlock opportunities that prioritise ordinary citizens.

Participants emphasised diplomacy’s role in tackling socio-economic challenges and promoting inclusive growth.

The Working Brunch reinforced Rustenburg’s dedication to cultivating meaningful international ties that align with municipal development goals, ultimately enhancing residents’ quality of life while supporting South Africa’s broader foreign policy objectives.
