High Commissioner Sandile Edwin Schalk meets Sri Lanka’s Director-General for African Affairs to discuss opportunities for closer cooperation between the two countries.
The South African High Commission in Sri Lanka is continuing efforts to strengthen bilateral relations between South Africa and Sri Lanka, with a recent diplomatic engagement focusing on opportunities for enhanced cooperation in tourism, sports diplomacy and other areas of mutual interest.
South African High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, H.E. Sandile Edwin Schalk, held a meeting with Ambassador Bandara, Director-General for African Affairs at Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for discussions aimed at further strengthening relations between the two countries.
The engagement provided an opportunity to exchange views on areas where South Africa and Sri Lanka can expand cooperation and build on their longstanding diplomatic relationship.
The latest meeting between High Commissioner Schalk and Ambassador Bandara forms part of continued diplomatic engagement aimed at identifying practical areas for closer cooperation.
Focus on Tourism and Sports Diplomacy
Tourism cooperation was among the key areas discussed during the engagement, highlighting the potential for greater people-to-people connections and increased exchanges between South Africa and Sri Lanka.
Both countries possess strong tourism offerings and complementary opportunities for collaboration, creating scope for greater promotion of travel, cultural exchanges and tourism-related partnerships.
Sports diplomacy was also highlighted as an important area of cooperation. Sport has long served as a platform for strengthening international relations, bringing communities together and creating opportunities for youth and institutional exchanges.
The discussion therefore reflects the broader potential for South Africa and Sri Lanka to use tourism, sport and people-to-people relations as tools for strengthening bilateral ties.
More recently, South African and Sri Lankan officials have continued to engage on strengthening bilateral cooperation. In February 2026, High Commissioner Schalk held discussions with Sri Lanka’s Defence Secretary on bilateral relations, defence cooperation and mutual security interests.
