The diplomatic relationship between South Africa and Ghana received further attention following a courtesy call between the High Commissioner of South Africa to New Zealand, High Commissioner Sexwale, and the High Commissioner of Ghana, Ms Doris A.D. Brese.
Ms Brese was in Wellington to present her Letters of Credence, marking an important step in Ghana’s diplomatic engagement with Aotearoa New Zealand.
According to the South African High Commission in Wellington, the meeting provided an opportunity for the two High Commissioners to exchange views on developments in Aotearoa New Zealand and the wider Pacific region.
Ghana’s Diplomatic Representation in New Zealand
Ghana is represented in Aotearoa New Zealand on a non-resident basis from Canberra, Australia. This diplomatic arrangement reflects the broader regional responsibilities carried by Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Australia.
South Africa, meanwhile, maintains resident diplomatic representation in New Zealand through its High Commission in Wellington.
The South African High Commission noted that South Africa is one of only two African countries, alongside Egypt, with resident diplomatic representation in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Shared Diplomatic Responsibilities in the Pacific
The meeting also highlighted the wider regional responsibilities of the two diplomatic missions.
Both High Commissioners are accredited to several Pacific Island States, creating opportunities for engagement and the exchange of perspectives on political, economic and regional developments affecting the Pacific.
Their shared accreditation provides an additional platform for diplomatic dialogue between South Africa and Ghana, particularly on matters of common interest involving Africa, New Zealand and the Pacific region.
