South Africa and the Kingdom of Thailand have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations following a high-level meeting between H.E. Mr. Darkey Africa, Ambassador of the Republic of South Africa to the Kingdom of Thailand, and Thailand’s Minister of Social Development and Human Security, Honourable Mr. Nikorn Soemklang, on 23 July 2026.
The courtesy visit underscored the shared commitment of both nations to advancing inclusive development, social protection, community empowerment, and human security while exploring new opportunities for enhanced cooperation across key social sectors.
Strengthening South Africa–Thailand Bilateral Relations
During the meeting, Ambassador Darkey Africa and Minister Nikorn Soemklang held wide-ranging discussions on matters of mutual interest, focusing on strengthening collaboration in addressing socio-economic challenges affecting both countries.
The discussions highlighted the importance of exchanging experiences, policy approaches, and best practices in promoting sustainable social development and improving the quality of life of vulnerable communities.

Both delegations stressed the urgency of finalising the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the Prevention and Combating of Trafficking in Persons, recognising it as an important instrument for strengthening cooperation between the two countries.
The discussions also addressed several growing security concerns, including:
- Human trafficking
- Scam compounds and organised criminal networks
- Drug trafficking
- Other forms of transnational crime
The two sides expressed concern over the increasing number of South African nationals arrested in Thailand for drug trafficking offences.
Recognising the complexity of these cross-border challenges, both parties agreed on the importance of strengthening collaboration, improving information sharing, and pursuing coordinated responses between relevant authorities.
