The Embassy of Peru in South Africa commemorated the 205th Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Peru with a distinguished diplomatic reception in Pretoria, bringing together members of the diplomatic corps, government officials, business leaders, the Peruvian community, and invited guests in celebration of Peru’s national day and the enduring friendship between Peru and South Africa.

The reception was graciously hosted by H.E. Ambassador José Javier Augusto Shaw and his spouse, Ms Olga Zakharova.

Representing the Government of South Africa was Deputy Minister of Employment and Labour Judith Nemadzinga-Tshabalala, whose presence underscored the importance South Africa places on its longstanding relationship with Peru.

The official programme commenced with the rendition of the national anthems of the Republic of Peru and the Republic of South Africa, performed by the South African Police Service (SAPS) Band, setting a dignified tone for the evening’s celebrations.

Celebrating 205 Years of Peruvian Independence

Welcoming guests to the Residence of Peru, Ambassador José Javier Augusto Shaw reflected on the significance of Peru’s independence, proclaimed by General José de San Martín on 28 July 1821, which gave birth to a free and sovereign republic founded on democracy, liberty, the rule of law, and respect for human dignity.

Addressing diplomats, government representatives, and members of the Peruvian community, Ambassador Shaw expressed gratitude for the continued friendship between Peru and South Africa, describing the occasion as a celebration not only of Peru’s history but also of the strong bonds shared between the two nations.

The Ambassador also acknowledged South Africa’s recent hosting of the FIFA Club World Cup, congratulating Spain on lifting the trophy, Argentina for an outstanding tournament, and Bafana Bafana for their impressive performances, adding a light-hearted moment to his address.

Honouring Nelson Mandela’s Legacy

Recognising that July is dedicated to celebrating the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela, Ambassador Shaw said Peru joins South Africans in paying tribute to the global icon whose commitment to reconciliation, justice, and human dignity continues to inspire people around the world.

He noted that Mandela’s legacy serves as a reminder that dialogue, mutual respect, and a shared vision remain essential foundations for international cooperation and enduring partnerships.

Peru Showcases Economic Opportunities

Highlighting Peru’s economic outlook, Ambassador Shaw described his country as one of Latin America’s most dynamic and stable economies, supported by sound macroeconomic policies, a broad network of international trade agreements, and strategic investments in infrastructure.

He pointed to transformative projects such as the Port of Chancay and the new Jorge Chávez International Airport, which are strengthening Peru’s connectivity with the Asia-Pacific region while positioning the country as a major logistics and investment hub in Latin America.

The Ambassador also reaffirmed Peru’s commitment to democracy, noting the country’s peaceful electoral process and orderly democratic transition of government, while emphasising Peru’s determination to address challenges including poverty, corruption, public security, and social inclusion.

Expanding Peru’s Partnership with Africa

Ambassador Shaw reaffirmed Peru’s commitment to multilateral diplomacy and expanding engagement with Africa, describing the continent as a region of growing strategic importance.

He stressed that Peru continues to strengthen international cooperation to combat transnational organised crime, drug trafficking, human trafficking, illegal mining, illicit arms trafficking, and other shared global challenges, while maintaining a foreign policy centred on people, development, and international collaboration.

Reflecting on his two years in South Africa, Ambassador Shaw described the country as an important strategic partner with whom Peru shares common democratic values and a mutual commitment to peace, development, and international cooperation.

He also paid tribute to the late Peruvian diplomat and former United Nations Secretary-General Javier Pérez de Cuéllar, recognising his important contribution to the peaceful end of apartheid and South Africa’s democratic transition.

South Africa Reaffirms Commitment to Bilateral Relations

Delivering remarks on behalf of the Government of South Africa, Deputy Minister Judith Nemadzinga-Tshabalala congratulated Peru on its 205th Independence Anniversary, describing the occasion as a celebration of resilience, courage, and the enduring pursuit of freedom.

She reflected on the historical struggles that shaped Peru’s independence, drawing parallels with South Africa’s own liberation journey and emphasising that both nations share a commitment to democracy, justice, equality, and human dignity.

The Deputy Minister noted that the celebration coincides with a significant year for South Africa, which marks 32 years of democracy, 30 years since the adoption of the Constitution, 50 years since the 1976 Soweto Uprising, and 70 years since the historic 1956 Women’s March, while continuing to honour the legacy of former President Nelson Mandela through the annual 67 Minutes of Service campaign.

She also recalled South Africa’s tribute earlier this year to former United Nations Secretary-General Javier Pérez de Cuéllar at Freedom Park, recognising his role in supporting South Africa’s journey to democracy.

Unlocking New Economic Opportunities

Deputy Minister Nemadzinga-Tshabalala highlighted the strong bilateral relationship that has existed since South Africa and Peru established diplomatic relations in 1993.

She said both countries remain committed to expanding cooperation in sectors including mining, agriculture, defence, aquaculture and fisheries, science and technology, tourism, trade, and investment, while expressing confidence that the upcoming Second South Africa–Peru Political Consultations will further strengthen diplomatic and economic ties.

The Deputy Minister further encouraged greater utilisation of the opportunities created by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), noting that Peru is well positioned to deepen its commercial engagement with African markets through South Africa.

She also emphasised that South Africa and Peru continue to work together in advancing international peace, addressing climate change, supporting multilateralism, and promoting the interests of the Global South.

Celebrating a Growing Partnership

The reception served not only as a celebration of Peru’s 205 years of independence but also as a reflection of the growing partnership between Peru and South Africa.

Through diplomatic dialogue, expanding trade and investment, and shared commitments to democracy, sustainable development, and international cooperation, both countries continue to deepen a relationship that has strengthened steadily over more than three decades.

The evening concluded with renewed optimism for the future of Peru–South Africa relations as diplomats and guests celebrated the friendship and shared aspirations that continue to unite the two nations.
