South Africa Strengthens Canada Relations as Deputy Minister Alvin Botes Begins Official Visit

South Africa’s Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Alvin Botes, has arrived in Canada for an official working visit aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation in key strategic sectors.

Upon his arrival, Deputy Minister Botes was warmly welcomed by South Africa’s High Commissioner to Canada, Rieaz Shaik, underscoring the importance of the visit in advancing diplomatic, economic and development cooperation between the two countries.

The official programme is expected to focus on strengthening South Africa–Canada collaboration across several priority areas that support sustainable development, innovation and inclusive economic growth.

Strategic Areas of Cooperation

The visit is centred around four key pillars that are expected to guide engagements with Canadian government representatives, industry leaders and other stakeholders:

1. Food Security and Agricultural Innovation

South Africa and Canada are expected to explore opportunities to strengthen agricultural cooperation through innovation, climate-smart farming practices, research partnerships and improved food security initiatives.

2. Critical Mineral Beneficiation and Mining Technology

With South Africa possessing some of the world’s largest reserves of critical minerals, discussions are expected to focus on value addition, mineral beneficiation, responsible mining practices and the adoption of advanced mining technologies.

3. Energy Innovation and the Just Energy Transition

The visit also seeks to deepen cooperation in renewable energy, clean technologies and South Africa’s Just Energy Transition, promoting sustainable energy solutions while supporting economic development and job creation.

4. Knowledge Exchange and Skills Development

Education, research collaboration and skills development remain central to the partnership, with opportunities to enhance academic exchanges, vocational training and innovation ecosystems between the two countries.

Strengthening South Africa–Canada Relations

Canada and South Africa enjoy longstanding diplomatic relations built on shared democratic values, multilateral cooperation and strong people-to-people ties. The visit by Deputy Minister Botes reflects both countries’ commitment to expanding cooperation in areas that contribute to sustainable development, economic resilience and technological advancement.

High Commissioner Rieaz Shaik and the South African High Commission in Canada are expected to facilitate a series of engagements designed to foster stronger institutional partnerships and unlock new opportunities for trade, investment and innovation.
