South African Ambassador to Vietnam, Her Excellency Vuyiswa Tulelo, led the South African Embassy’s Nelson Mandela Day 2026 celebrations in Hanoi, bringing together members of the diplomatic community, partners and local organisations in a meaningful act of service inspired by the legacy of the late President Nelson Mandela.

The celebrations were held in partnership with Birla Children’s Home, where the Embassy, alongside members of the diplomatic corps and supporters, spent time with children while making donations that will contribute to their wellbeing and development.

Promoting Mandela’s Legacy Through Service

Nelson Mandela Day, observed annually on 18 July, encourages people across the world to dedicate 67 minutes of their time to serving others—symbolising the 67 years Nelson Mandela devoted to public service and the struggle for justice, equality and human dignity.

In Hanoi, the South African Embassy embraced this spirit by organising a community outreach initiative focused on supporting vulnerable children and strengthening partnerships that promote compassion and social responsibility.

Diplomatic Community Joins Hands

The Embassy highlighted the importance of collaboration, acknowledging the collective efforts of the diplomatic community and local partners in making the initiative a success.

According to the Embassy, the collaborative effort between diplomatic missions and partners helped ensure that the Nelson Mandela Day celebrations had a meaningful and lasting impact on the children at Birla Children’s Home.

The Embassy also recognised the support of South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) and Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reflecting the strong bilateral relationship between South Africa and Vietnam.

The Nelson Mandela Day programme included the presentation of donated goods and essential supplies to Birla Children’s Home.
