South Africa in Canada Engages Anglo American and Teck Executives on Proposed Merger

South African High Commissioner to Canada, H.E. Riaz ‘Moe’ Shaik, received a delegation from Anglo American for a courtesy visit focused on developments surrounding the proposed Anglo American-Teck merger.

The delegation included Richard Price, incoming Non-Executive Director of the Anglo-Teck Board of Directors; James Wyatt-Tilby, Senior Vice President: Corporate Affairs; and Lauren Vopni, Vice President: Government and International Relations for the United Kingdom, Canada and European Union.

The engagement provided an opportunity to discuss developments relating to the proposed combination of Anglo American and Teck Resources, which is expected to create Anglo Teck, a major global mining and critical-minerals company.

Discussions on Anglo American and Teck merger

The meeting comes as Anglo American and Teck continue preparations for the completion of their merger. The companies announced their agreement to combine in September 2025 through a merger of equals, with the resulting company to be headquartered in Vancouver, Canada, and supported by corporate offices in London and Johannesburg.

According to Anglo American, integration planning is well advanced, with the companies working towards completion within the previously announced September 2026 to March 2027 timeframe, subject to the remaining regulatory and other closing conditions.

The proposed Anglo Teck combination is expected to have a significant focus on copper and other critical minerals. The companies have stated that the combined group would become one of the world’s leading copper producers, while the merger is also intended to bring together their operational, technical and commercial capabilities.

A significant development for the global mining sector

The proposed merger forms part of broader developments in the global mining industry, particularly around minerals considered important to economic development and the energy transition.

Anglo American reported in July that integration planning for the proposed merger was well advanced. The company also said the transaction remained within its anticipated completion window, with China anti-trust approval identified at that stage as the final outstanding regulatory milestone.

The future Anglo Teck group is expected to have its global headquarters in Vancouver, while Johannesburg will serve as one of its corporate offices, reflecting the continued importance of South Africa within the group’s international footprint.

Strengthening South Africa-Canada engagement

The courtesy visit also highlights the role of diplomatic missions in facilitating engagement between governments, businesses and international stakeholders.

For South Africa, Canada’s mining sector and investment environment remain relevant to broader economic and commercial relations. Engagements between diplomatic representatives and major international companies provide opportunities to exchange information on developments affecting the mining sector and the wider economic relationship.

The meeting between High Commissioner Shaik and the Anglo American delegation therefore forms part of ongoing stakeholder engagement between South Africa, Canada and the international business community.

Anglo Teck’s global outlook

Anglo American and Teck have outlined plans for Anglo Teck to operate as a global critical-minerals company with a strong copper portfolio. The companies have projected approximately US$800 million in annual pre-tax synergies following completion of the merger, although these are company projections rather than realised outcomes.

The companies have also identified potential opportunities arising from their adjacent Collahuasi and Quebrada Blanca copper operations in Chile.

As the transaction progresses, developments around the merger will remain relevant to stakeholders across the mining, investment, trade and diplomatic communities.

The engagement in Ottawa underscores the importance of continued dialogue between South African diplomatic representatives and major international business stakeholders as developments in the global mining sector unfold.
