South Africa’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Ambassador Zaheer Laher, held a high-level meeting with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Mr Barham Salih, to discuss the growing global refugee crisis and explore ways to strengthen cooperation between South Africa and the UN refugee agency.
The discussions focused on reinforcing the long-standing partnership between South Africa and the UNHCR to better respond to the increasing humanitarian needs of refugees worldwide, particularly at a time when international resources are under significant strain.
Addressing Rising Humanitarian Needs
During the meeting, Ambassador Laher and High Commissioner Salih exchanged views on the evolving global displacement landscape, where conflicts, political instability, climate-related disasters, and economic challenges continue to force millions of people from their homes.
