South Africa and Thailand are exploring new opportunities to strengthen bilateral trade, investment and economic cooperation, with a renewed focus on connecting businesses and investment promotion institutions in both countries.
The South African Embassy in Thailand has highlighted renewed efforts to deepen the economic partnership between South Africa and Thailand, following an engagement between South African Ambassador to Thailand, H.E. Mr Darkey Africa, Embassy officials and Mr Narit Therdsteerasukdi, Secretary General of the Thailand Board of Investment (BOI).
The discussions focused on advancing practical initiatives that could contribute to increased two-way trade and investment between the two countries.
Strengthening InvestSA and Thailand Board of Investment Cooperation
A key area of discussion was the continued cooperation between InvestSA and the Thailand Board of Investment, building on the framework established through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in 2017.
The institutional partnership provides a platform for South Africa and Thailand to explore opportunities for investment promotion, business linkages and greater cooperation between their respective investment communities.
The latest engagement considered ways of expanding this cooperation and creating practical platforms through which businesses can gain a better understanding of investment opportunities in both markets.

Connecting South African and Thai Businesses
The discussions also explored practical mechanisms to connect South African investment opportunities with the Thai business community.
Among the initiatives under consideration is a proposed online investment promotion seminar that could provide businesses and investors with an opportunity to exchange information on investment opportunities, sectors of interest and potential areas for collaboration.
Such platforms can support greater awareness of market opportunities while facilitating direct engagement between stakeholders from South Africa and Thailand.
Focus on Two-Way Trade and Investment
The engagement forms part of broader efforts to strengthen the economic dimension of South Africa-Thailand relations.
Beyond promoting investment into South Africa, the discussions also point to the importance of creating opportunities for South African businesses to engage with the Thai market and wider Southeast Asian economy.
Greater institutional cooperation between investment promotion agencies can assist in identifying areas where businesses can establish partnerships, explore new markets and develop commercial relationships.
Looking Ahead to 35 Years of Bilateral Relations
South Africa and Thailand are set to mark 35 years of bilateral relations in 2027, providing an important milestone for both countries to reflect on their longstanding diplomatic relationship while identifying opportunities for further cooperation.
The upcoming anniversary also presents an opportunity to strengthen economic diplomacy and place greater emphasis on trade, investment and private-sector engagement.
The latest meeting therefore comes at a significant time as both countries look towards expanding institutional cooperation and developing concrete initiatives that can contribute to stronger economic ties.
Strengthening Economic Diplomacy
For South Africa, closer engagement with Thailand forms part of efforts to expand international market opportunities for South African businesses and attract investment into the country.
Thailand, meanwhile, remains an important economic partner in Southeast Asia, making continued engagement between investment promotion institutions relevant to efforts aimed at expanding commercial ties.
The proposed initiatives involving InvestSA, the Thailand Board of Investment and business stakeholders could provide additional channels for information-sharing, investment promotion and business-to-business engagement.
As South Africa and Thailand approach the 35th anniversary of their diplomatic relations, the renewed focus on economic cooperation demonstrates the importance of building stronger institutional and commercial links between the two countries.
