Japan eVisa for South Africans: Everything You Need to Know Before You Apply

South Africans planning to visit Japan for tourism can take advantage of the country’s electronic visa (eVisa) system, which enables eligible travellers to complete their visa application online before travelling.

While some recent social media posts have presented this as a new development, South African residents have been eligible to apply for Japan’s online tourist eVisa since 27 March 2023. The Government of Japan continues to list South Africa among the countries eligible to use the JAPAN eVisa system, making it the only African country currently included in the programme.

Whether you are travelling to experience Japan’s rich culture, iconic cities, historic landmarks or world-renowned cuisine, here’s everything you need to know before applying.

What is the Japan eVisa?

The JAPAN eVisa is an electronic visa issued by the Government of Japan for eligible foreign nationals travelling to Japan for short-term tourism.

Instead of submitting a traditional paper application, eligible applicants can complete the visa application online through Japan’s official eVisa platform. Once approved, travellers receive a digital Visa Issuance Notice, which must be displayed online when boarding and upon arrival in Japan. Screenshots, printed copies or PDF versions are not accepted.

Who Can Apply?

Residents of South Africa who require a visa to enter Japan may apply online, provided they meet the eligibility criteria established by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The online eVisa is available only for:

  • Tourism
  • Short-term visits
  • Single-entry travel
  • Stays of up to 90 days

Travellers visiting Japan for business, employment, study, visiting relatives or other purposes must follow the appropriate visa application process through the Embassy of Japan.
