Germany’s Consul General in Cape Town, Tanja Werheit, has officially bid farewell to the Mother City after serving for five years, bringing an end to a diplomatic posting marked by strengthened bilateral cooperation, economic engagement, cultural exchange, and scientific collaboration between Germany and South Africa.
In an emotional farewell message shared on social media, Werheit wrote:
“Totsiens, lekker Kaapstad! Baie dankie vir alles. So privileged to have been able to call you home for the last 5 years. Until we meet again.”
Her heartfelt message reflects the strong connection she developed with Cape Town and the people of South Africa during her tenure.
Five Years of Building Stronger Germany–South Africa Relations
Since assuming office as Consul General in Cape Town in July 2021, Tanja Werheit has overseen Germany’s diplomatic engagement across the Western Cape, Northern Cape, Eastern Cape, as well as St Helena and neighbouring islands. Before her appointment, she served in several senior diplomatic positions, including Deputy Head of Division for Business Diplomacy at Germany’s Federal Foreign Office in Berlin.
Throughout her tenure, Werheit consistently emphasised that the Cape region is not only renowned for its natural beauty but also for its vibrant economy, innovation ecosystem, academic excellence, and cultural diversity—areas where Germany and South Africa continue to deepen cooperation.
