High-Level Consultations Focus on Peace and Security in Africa
South Africa’s continued commitment to advancing peace, security and stability across the African continent was underscored during a high-level meeting between African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Bankole Adeoye, and South Africa’s Permanent Representative to the African Union, Ambassador Nonceba Losi.
The discussions focused on key peace and security developments across Africa, with particular emphasis on the situation in South Sudan and ongoing efforts to consolidate peace in the country.
Focus on South Sudan’s Peace Agreement
During the meeting, the two officials reviewed progress relating to the implementation of the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS), the landmark peace accord aimed at ending years of conflict and fostering national reconciliation.
Recognising the importance of sustaining momentum in the peace process, the parties agreed on a number of crucial steps to support the effective implementation of the agreement and strengthen efforts towards lasting peace and stability in South Sudan.
Strengthening Continental Efforts for Peace
The engagement reflects the African Union’s continued commitment to conflict prevention, peacebuilding and post-conflict reconstruction across the continent. It also highlights South Africa’s active role in supporting African-led solutions to African challenges through diplomacy, dialogue and multilateral cooperation.
Both sides reaffirmed the importance of coordinated action among African Union member states and regional stakeholders in addressing complex peace and security challenges and ensuring sustainable outcomes.
