South Africa and Bangladesh have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations following the successful convening of the Sixth Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM) and Foreign Office Consultations held at the OR Tambo Building in Pretoria on 21 May 2026.
The high-level engagement was co-chaired by Ambassador D. Malcomson, Acting Deputy Director-General for Asia and the Middle East in South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), and Ambassador Asad Alam Siam, Foreign Secretary (DG) of Bangladesh.
The consultations focused on enhancing the long-standing diplomatic partnership between the two nations, built on decades of solidarity, friendship, and mutually beneficial cooperation.
Celebrating 32 Years of Diplomatic Relations
A significant milestone highlighted during the meeting was the celebration of 32 years of formal diplomatic relations between South Africa and Bangladesh.
Both delegations reviewed progress made since the previous consultations held in Dhaka in 2019 and reflected on the positive trajectory of bilateral relations. Officials acknowledged that regular consultations had been interrupted by the global COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in a six-year gap between formal engagements.
Recognising the importance of sustained dialogue, both countries agreed to revive and institutionalise regular consultations through official exchanges, diplomatic engagements, and high-level visits.
“The meeting underscored the enduring friendship between South Africa and Bangladesh and the shared commitment to advancing cooperation across multiple sectors,” officials noted during the discussions.
Focus on Trade and Economic Growth
Economic cooperation featured prominently on the agenda, with both countries expressing satisfaction over growing trade relations and expanding commercial opportunities.
The two sides acknowledged that increased trade and investment have the potential to contribute significantly to economic growth, industrial development, and job creation in both countries.
Bangladesh highlighted its rapidly growing economy and encouraged deeper engagement between businesses and investors from both nations. In this regard, Bangladesh extended an invitation to South Africa to send a trade delegation to Dhaka for exploratory discussions aimed at identifying new opportunities for economic collaboration and market access.
The proposal was welcomed as a practical step towards unlocking greater bilateral trade potential and strengthening private sector partnerships.
Bangladesh Requests South African Mission in Dhaka
A notable outcome of the consultations was Bangladesh’s request for South Africa to consider establishing a resident diplomatic mission in Dhaka.
Bangladesh emphasised that a permanent South African diplomatic presence would further strengthen political, economic, and people-to-people relations while facilitating increased cooperation across various sectors.
South Africa acknowledged the request and indicated that the possibility of opening a resident mission in Bangladesh would be considered in the future.
Such a development would mark a significant milestone in diplomatic engagement between the two countries and could contribute to enhanced cooperation in trade, education, investment, tourism, and cultural exchanges.
Renewed Commitment to Bilateral Cooperation
The Sixth Senior Officials’ Meeting concluded with both countries reaffirming their shared commitment to deepening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
As South Africa and Bangladesh look towards the future, the consultations signalled renewed momentum in diplomatic engagement, economic collaboration, and strategic partnership, laying the foundation for stronger ties between Pretoria and Dhaka in the years ahead.
