Ambassador Raúl Ailán of Argentina has met with South Africa’s newly appointed Minister of Agriculture, Willie Aucamp, in Pretoria to discuss strengthening bilateral agricultural cooperation, expanding trade in agricultural products, and enhancing collaboration on animal health initiatives.
The high-level meeting underscored the longstanding partnership between Argentina and South Africa, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to advancing cooperation in agriculture, livestock production, and sanitary measures that facilitate international trade.
Expanding Bilateral Agricultural Trade
During the discussions, Ambassador Raúl Ailán and Minister Willie Aucamp reviewed the bilateral sanitary agenda and explored practical measures aimed at safeguarding and expanding trade in agricultural and livestock products between the two countries.
The engagement highlighted the importance of maintaining strong sanitary and phytosanitary standards to support market access while creating new opportunities for producers, exporters, and agribusinesses in both Argentina and South Africa.
The meeting reflects the shared objective of promoting sustainable agricultural growth through stronger diplomatic and technical cooperation.
Cooperation on Animal Health
A key focus of the discussions was continued collaboration in combating Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD), one of the most significant animal diseases affecting livestock industries worldwide.
Representatives from Argentine biotechnology company Biogénesis Bagó joined the discussions alongside officials from South Africa’s Ministry of Agriculture. Participants reviewed progress achieved thus far and examined opportunities created by South Africa’s new policies allowing greater private-sector participation in the importation and distribution of animal vaccines.
The dialogue demonstrated both countries’ commitment to strengthening animal health systems, protecting livestock industries, and supporting food security through scientific and technological cooperation.
Strengthening Argentina–South Africa Relations
The meeting forms part of the broader diplomatic relationship between Argentina and South Africa, which continues to expand across sectors including agriculture, trade, investment, science, technology, and innovation.
