In a strategic move to deepen economic engagement between South Africa and the Asia-Pacific region, the South African Consulate General in Hong Kong and Macao hosted the inaugural Trade and Investment Seminar in Macao on 18 March 2026 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel.
The event convened business leaders, industry experts, and stakeholders to explore avenues for enhanced trade, investment, and partnerships. Discussions centred on market access, regulatory frameworks, and collaborative opportunities in key sectors including technology, agriculture, and manufacturing.
The seminar underscored South Africa’s commitment to expanding its footprint in Asia, positioning the country as a gateway to African markets, abundant resources, and emerging growth prospects. Macao and Hong Kong, in turn, were highlighted as vital conduits to Asia’s capital, finance, and trade networks.
Participants examined how bilateral ties could create a “powerful corridor” for cross-regional business expansion. The initiative builds on recent diplomatic efforts, including a business roundtable in Hong Kong that preceded the Macao gathering, with a follow-up seminar planned in Hong Kong.
The event marks a milestone in fostering lasting commercial relationships amid evolving global dynamics. As South Africa seeks diversified trade partners beyond traditional markets, such engagements signal growing momentum in South Africa-Asia economic diplomacy.
