South Africa’s Ambassador to Thailand, H.E. Darkey Ephraim Africa, hosted a high-level engagement with key representatives from Thailand’s automotive sector and the South African–Thai Chamber of Commerce (SATCC) on 26 February 2026 at the Conrad Bangkok Hotel.
The event brought together industry stakeholders for candid discussions on mutual opportunities. Participants explored avenues to attract Thai investment into South Africa’s automotive value chain, while highlighting potential for South African firms to collaborate in Thailand’s dynamic manufacturing landscape.
Thailand ranks as one of Asia’s leading automotive hubs, producing millions of vehicles annually and boasting a robust supply chain for components. South Africa, meanwhile, seeks to revitalise its own sector through foreign direct investment, localisation, and job creation—aligning with national priorities to expand industrial capacity and reduce unemployment.
Ambassador Africa emphasised the Embassy’s dedication to fostering stronger bilateral dialogue and practical cooperation. The engagement underscores South Africa’s and Thailand’s commitment to turning economic ties into tangible benefits for both nations, boosted by recent successes such as Thai-linked joint ventures injecting over R1 billion into South African parts manufacturing.
The SATCC played a pivotal role in facilitating the dialogue, reinforcing its mandate to promote trade and business collaboration between the two countries.As global automotive shifts accelerate—particularly toward sustainable technologies—such initiatives position South Africa and Thailand to explore complementary strengths, from component production to emerging new energy vehicle opportunities.
