Deputy Director-General Clayson Monyela, serving as Acting Chief of State Protocol at the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), received copies of the Letters of Credence from Ms Anne Beathe Kristiansen, the Ambassador-Designate of the Kingdom of Norway.

The presentation marks a key step in her formal accreditation and paves the way for her to assume full duties as Norway’s envoy to South Africa and neighbouring countries.

Ms Kristiansen brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously served as Norway’s Minister of International Development and Minister of Nordic Cooperation from 2021 to 2025. A seasoned politician and diplomat affiliated with the Centre Party, she began her foreign service career as Second Secretary at the Norwegian Embassy in Maputo, Mozambique (2007–2011). Her background in development policy, multilateral engagement, and regional Southern African affairs positions her well to advance shared priorities. Recent social media announcements from the Norwegian Embassy playfully noted her preparations for the posting, including a light-hearted reference to travelling “on skis,” highlighting her enthusiasm for the assignment.

Diplomatic Relations with South Africa

South Africa and Norway enjoy excellent political and economic relations, built on decades of cooperation. The two nations collaborate closely on interlinking global issues, including global health initiatives, climate change mitigation, renewable energy transitions, sustainable blue economy development, peace and reconciliation efforts—particularly women’s peace and security—and expanding trade and investment opportunities. Recent engagements, such as Norway’s full participation as a guest in South Africa’s G20 presidency, have further elevated bilateral dialogue on multilateralism and international law. With Ms Kristiansen’s arrival, both sides anticipate renewed momentum in these areas, fostering deeper partnerships for mutual benefit and global stability.
