Ms Maria Gustava, High Commissioner-Designate of the Republic of Mozambique, formally presented copies of her Letters of Credence to Acting Chief of State Protocol, Mr Clayson Monyela.

The presentation marks the official start of her tenure, paving the way for her accreditation as Mozambique’s representative in South Africa and reinforcing the deep bilateral bonds between the two neighbouring nations.

Ms Maria Gustava is a seasoned career diplomat who joined Mozambique’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation in 1989. Holding a Master’s degree in Foreign Affairs and Trade from Monash University in Australia, she has held key positions including Head of Department for Multilateral Economic Relations, Deputy Head of Mission in South Africa, Deputy Director General for International Organizations, and Director General for Asia and Oceania. Most recently, she served as Mozambique’s Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China (with concurrent accreditation to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea), where she actively promoted economic ties, people-to-people exchanges, and regional cooperation. Her prior experience in South Africa and extensive multilateral background position her well to advance Mozambique’s interests in Pretoria.

Diplomatic Relations with South Africa

Since South Africa’s democratic transition in 1994 and the consolidation of peace in Mozambique, bilateral relations have flourished, particularly in economic cooperation and investment. Landmark initiatives include the multibillion-rand Maputo Development Corridor, which links Mozambique’s Port of Maputo to South Africa’s industrial Gauteng province, facilitating trade in minerals, agriculture, and manufactured goods. The corridor remains a cornerstone of regional connectivity, supported by ongoing infrastructure upgrades and private-sector partnerships. The 20 July 1994 Agreement establishing the Joint Permanent Commission for Cooperation provided an enduring framework for collaboration.
