South African Deputy Minister Alvin Botes participated in a poignant wreath-laying ceremony at the Commonwealth Memorial Gates in London on 9 March 2026.
The Deputy Minister joined high commissioners, armed forces representatives, veterans, faith leaders and members of the public to honour the unsung contributions of women during the World Wars.
The annual event, held on Commonwealth Day, adopted the theme “Women in War” this year. It spotlighted the courage, resilience and leadership displayed by women who served in the First and Second World Wars—roles often overlooked in historical narratives. The Memorial Gates commemorate the five million volunteers from Africa, the Indian subcontinent and the Caribbean who served in those conflicts, recognising their sacrifices and the lasting legacy of their descendants in modern society.
Deputy Minister Botes, representing South Africa, laid a wreath as part of the solemn tribute. His presence underscored the Commonwealth’s shared history and the enduring bonds among member nations. The ceremony formed part of broader Commonwealth Week observances, which included the Commonwealth Day Service at Westminster Abbey and the 26th Commonwealth Foreign Affairs Ministers Meeting.
Botes is in the United Kingdom to engage in Commonwealth Week activities, strengthening diplomatic ties and highlighting South Africa’s commitment to multilateral remembrance and cooperation. The event served as a powerful reminder of women’s pivotal yet under-acknowledged wartime roles, fostering reflection on collective sacrifice and progress toward gender equity in historical recognition.
