The Embassies of the Dominican Republic and Sweden in South Africa co-hosted a compelling panel discussion to mark International Women’s Day, focusing on the critical issue of violence against women in politics and its detrimental effects on representative democracy.

Titled “Violence against Women in Politics and its Impact on Representative Democracy,” the event featured a keynote address by Hon. Mmapaseka Steve Letsike, South Africa’s Deputy Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities. Letsike stressed the urgent need to promote women’s leadership, bolster their involvement in public life, and build more equitable and inclusive societies. She praised the collaborative initiative between Sweden and the Dominican Republic for fostering this vital dialogue.

Panellists included Dominican human rights advocate Dilia Leticia Jorge Mera and Dr. Nkatha Murungi, Deputy Director of the Centre for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria. Both underscored that ensuring women’s full and safe participation in political spheres is indispensable to strengthening democratic quality. The discussion highlighted ongoing global efforts to combat gender-based barriers in governance.
