In a delightful and light-hearted announcement capturing imaginations on social media, Norway’s newly appointed ambassador to South Africa, Anne Beathe Kristiansen Tvinnereim, has proclaimed she’s “on her way – on skis!”

The former Minister of International Development is seen in an endearing video from Norway’s snowy landscapes, warmly greeting South Africans with “Sawubona!” and playfully noting that Norwegians are born with skis on their feet.

Tvinnereim, 51, arrives with substantial experience and a personal connection to the region. A Centre Party politician, she served as Norway’s Minister of International Development from 2021 to 2025, championing global aid, climate action, and sustainable development. During her tenure, she made at least one documented visit to South Africa. In April 2023, she travelled to the country and toured renewable energy projects, including Dyason’s Klip 2 solar facility in Upington, Northern Cape. She praised the “huge” potential for renewables in South Africa, underscored opportunities for Norwegian technology and cooperation in the green transition, and held discussions with local stakeholders on energy challenges and prospects.

This posting marks her first full diplomatic ambassadorship, accredited to South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, Madagascar, Zimbabwe, and the SADC. In the embassy-posted video, Tvinnereim conveys genuine excitement for her journey to Pretoria, closing with “Sizobonana!” – Zulu for “we’ll see each other.” The cheerful footage contrasts Norway’s wintry terrain with South Africa’s sunny vistas, signalling renewed vigour for bilateral cooperation in trade, renewable energy, and development assistance.

With her prior insights into South Africa’s energy landscape, Tvinnereim’s arrival promises to propel Norway-South Africa partnerships forward – perhaps even skiing them to fresh summits.
